The very popular and veteran Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus was recently caught in a twitter brouhaha with Nigerian writers when she hinted that they shouldn’t celebrate the adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s 2013 novel, Americanah because there were Igbo women who should play the role of Ifemelu other than the Kenyan-American Hollywood actress, Lupita Nyong’O.
The tweet from which the long thread which heralded discussions, arguments and subtle insult was posted by one of Nigeria’s most followed literary blogs, Brittlepaper. The tweet read:
Back in Mar’18, we reported Lupita Nyong’O and Dana Guirra teaming up in an HBO production of #Ammericanah with Lupita Nyong’O playing Ifemelu. Now that the project is moving forward, the ? is who will play Obinze? Who will play Blaine? What do you think? Comment below?
Stella Damasus replied to the tweet as follows:
They are playing Igbo characters and we are celebrating? Really? What happened to Genevieve? What about Rita Dominic? Stephanie Okereke Linus nko? Abeg make una shift?
And this was all there was needed for a very long argument which began with the Igbo Nigerian born novelist, Chika Unigwe who replied as follows:
A nollywood producer, director, etc. should have optioned the movie rights to the book. He who plays piper dictates the tune? Chinwetel Ejiofor plays a Malawian in his most recent movie.
