English Championship club, Middlesbrough have confirmed that Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi will leave the club this summer.
The former chelsea midfielder signed a short term deal with the Riverside Stadium outfit, in January after leaving Chinese super league team, Tianjin Teda.
The 32 year old impressed during his six month spell with the club making 18 appearances, and aided in keeping seven clean sheets and scoring one goal.
Despite his efforts, the team missed out on a place in the championship play-off by a point after finishing seventh on the table.
“Mikel, alongside three other players, Stewart Downing, Dimi Konstantopoulos, Andy Lonergan, has not been offered a new deal following the expiry of their contracts, and are set to become free agents this summer ” read a statement from the club website.
Meanwhile, Mikel has been included in Gernot Rohr’s 25 man provisional squad for the 2019 Africa cup of Nations in Egypt, which kicks off on 21st June.
Nigeria, who are three times champions have been drawn in Group B alongside Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar.
